High Rock is a marketing and design firm based in Hagerstown with an office in Frederick.
The American Advertising Federation sponsors the ADDY competition among its 200 member clubs in 15 districts. The ADDYs recognize creative excellence in advertising in all types of media across the world.
High Rock's entry was an annual report for the Can Manufacturers Institute, the trade association of the metal and composite can manufacturing industry. It was judged best out of 303 entries.
High Rock's work caught the eye of judge Matt Hildebrand right from the beginning.
"High Rock took what could have been a very mundane and boring subject -- aluminum cans -- and presented an appropriate and interesting design from beginning to end," said Hildebrand, associate creative director for multimedia for the Pittsburgh-based Mullen company.
The American Advertising Federation requires that judges must be from outside the competition's area, said Lisa Gorham, co-chairwoman of the Frederick competition with fellow Jean Peterson Design employee Emily Dorr.
Competitors earn a Gold ADDY Award if they win a particular advertising competition. A Silver ADDY goes to the next best competitor.
Both Gold and Silver award winners can enter their work in the District 2 competition at the Hudson Theater in New York in late March.
The Frederick club pays to send the Gold winners' packets to New York. The Silver award winners pay their own way, Gorham said.
District 2 includes advertising clubs in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Competitors who earn a Gold or Silver at District 2 can compete in the nationals June 10 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta.
The Frederick competition awarded 23 student entries out of 85 submitted. Students also can compete at the District 2 and national competitions.
